About Family Crest in Japan

Emblems/Crests are used to decorate and identify an individual, a family or an organization. Especially, family crest is called Kamon (家紋).

There are four kinds of family crests, representative crest(代表紋、表紋), family crest(in the narrow sense. 定紋、本紋、正紋) , sub-crest(替紋、副紋、裏紋、別紋、控紋) and female crest(女紋). A clan has one representative crest and a family has one family crest in the narrow sense. There are many families that do not have sub-crest, but some have one or several. Female crest is inherited in the female line, but it is a custom found in some areas of western Japan, and with this, the family is regarded as a considerable old house.

We can change or transfer crests and personal crests’s design anytime as you like (Except to Imperial Crest), without having to register them.

Japanese people decorate their crests in their foreheads, decorate them in a room, carve them in a tombstone or make a pattern of kimonos, some of them being worn as badges or accessories.

Some Organizations have emblems, some enterprises’ emblems comes from family crests of their founders(Example Mitsubishi). Shrines and temples also have each emblem. The emblem of the government comes from imperial sub-crests.
